John M. (Marty) Doggett was the Headmaster of The Governor's Academy in Byfield, MA from 1999 until July, 2011. Prior to this appointment, he worked at the Lawrenceville School for twenty five years. During that period, he was a teacher of AP Economics and American History, a Housemaster, a coach of football and lacrosse, Director of the Fifth Form, Dean of Students and Associate Headmaster. He was the Chair and Trustee of the Lawrence Township Educational Foundation, a Board member of Granville Academy, a Trustee of the Lawrenceville School Camp and served on the College Board's Test Development Committee for Advanced Placement Economics.
Mr. Doggett is a cum laude graduate of Williams College with a Bachelor’s degree in American Civilization He holds a Master’s Degree in History from New York University.
Mr. Doggett is a member of the Headmaster's Association and is on the Board of Trustees the Fessenden School,the English Speaking Union, and Esperanza Academy. He has also chaired two NEASC Ten Year Accreditation Committees and co-chaired an CIS-NEASC Accreditation Committee for an international school.
During his tenure at the Governor’s Academy, Mr. Doggett oversaw the school’s name change from Governor Dummer Academy to The Governor’s Academy. Additionally, the school constructed a state of the art ice rink, a new 30 bed dormitory, a student center, a turf field, a fitness center, a 500 seat performing arts center, a Buidings and Grounds facility and built or added eight new faculty residences, as well as making many enhancements to existing facilities. The curriculum has expanded to include Mandarin Chinese, Computer Science and four new Advanced Placement courses. Mr. Doggett also established a vibrant exchange program with schools in Kenya, China, Honduras, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Germany, UK and The Navajo Indian Reservation. He also initiated a summer science internship program with leading Boston medical and research centers.
Marty and his wife Patty have five sons, four of whom graduated from the Academy.
