MartinDr. James Martin,  Vice President and Chief Academic Officer

Dr. James Martin was the first consultant to join the Samels Group, the precursor to The Education Alliance, in the late 1980s.  Since that time, Dr. Martin has joined Dr. Samels in writing, lecturing and consulting to institutions of higher education and other non-profit organizations, nationally and internationally. 

Dr. Martin holds an undergraduate degree in English and American Literature from Colby College, a Master of Divinity from Boston University and a Doctoral Degree in English Literature and Religion from Boston University’s Graduate School of Arts of Sciences.  Dr. Martin previously served as a faculty member at Suffolk University, the University of Massachusetts and as Chief Academic Officer and Provost at Mount Ida College.  Since the mid 1990s, he has taught courses in higher education management in the graduate program of education at Boston College, and he continues as a tenured professor of English at Mount Ida.

Dr. Martin received a Fulbright Fellowship to study mergers within the University of London system.  He is also an ordained United Methodist Minister.

With Dr. Samels, he has authored two books with the Johns Hopkins University Press:  Merging Colleges For Mutual Growth, and First Among Equals:  The Role of The Chief Academic Officer.  He has co-written a column on higher education, “Higher Ed 101,” for the Boston Business Journal since 1994.  He also co-hosted “Future Shock In Higher Education,” the nation’s only regularly scheduled talk television program on higher education for the Massachusetts Corporation for Educational Telecommunications (MCET) satellite learning network from 1994 to 1999.

Dr. Martin, with Dr. Samels, has published articles and opinion editorials in a large number of journals and newspapers, including The London Times, The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, University Business, The Boston Herald, Trusteeship published by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, and Connection, the quarterly journal of the New England Board of Higher Education.
