Peter Gardner, Alliance Consultant
Peter Gardner is a professor in the Liberal Arts Department at Berklee College of Music, where he directs the English as a Second Language Program and teaches courses in ESL, intercultural communication, English composition, and literature. He has also served as Interim Chair of the Department for two years. He was a Senior Lecturer at Boston University’s Center for English Language and Orientation Programs for many years, and he has taught English as a foreign language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Japan.
He has lectured and trained faculty at universities and other educational institutions throughout Europe and East Asia and is currently a consultant in language arts, intercultural communication, and English as a second and foreign language. He has extensive experience in curriculum and program design at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Professor Gardner has published numerous articles on second-language acquisition, innovative pedagogy, and intercultural communication in such journals as College ESL, Journal of Teacher Education, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, Cross Currents, Literature/Film Quarterly, and Journal of Teaching Writing. In addition, he is the author of New Directions: Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking, 2nd edition (Cambridge University Press, 2005), a popular college text used in the U.S. and abroad.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature from Harvard College, a Master’s in Education from Boston University, and a Master’s in Music from the Academy of Music in Vienna, Austria. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in intercultural communication at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. .
